How to Hire The Best Local Roofing Contractor

roofing-300x211As a resident of Middle Tennessee, you have a wide selection of roofing contractors to choose from. When a problem arises, we suggest you take the same carein selecting your roofer as you would your dentist, doctor, or attorney. While it’s evident that you will want a roofing contractor that employs capable and competent installers, you will also need to thoroughly evaluate each proposal you receive and decide on the best price/value relationship for you. How then can you decide which local roofing contractors are the most professional and reputable company for you to trust with your roofing project or repair?

When filtering out roofing contractors, be sure to interview each company you receive a bid from. Whether you speak with a sales representative or the founder of the company, each individual should show pride and enthusiasm when discussing other jobs and/or roofing examples. If they do not or they sound less than excited, it will indicate his/her amount of involvement in the actual work.

When meeting with each roofing professional use the following five questions to guide you through their interview.

1. What is the name and address of the firm?

Having a firm that is close by increases the likelihood of better and fast service. If you are provided a PO Box, ask for a physical street address also to verify that the roofing contractor is a legitimate and verified business.

2. Is the company a licensed roofing contractor?

Many local governments require roofing contractors to be licensed before they can perform work in the area. Contact your city and county clerk’s office and find out if there are any requirements for roofing contractors in your region. True professional roofing contractors should have proof of license or credential from other professional and/or legal organizations. Your chosen contractor will possess a manufactures’ installation training certificate or something similar.

3. Is the company fully insured?

When selecting a contractor, double check that they have workers compensation and liability insurance. If an employee is hurt and the roofing company doesn’t have insurance, the home owner is may be liable. Ask the roofer for a copy of their insurance documents. Do not accept the roofing contractor by their word. They may carry health, life, and auto insurance which will not cover them in the event of an accident.

4. How long has the company been in business?

Usually if the firm has been established for more than three years you shouldn’t be too concerned, especially if they have a good online reputation. A new contractor shouldn’t be disqualified from your decision making process, but make sure to perform due diligence and check local review websites. As a rule of thumb, the longer the roofing contractor has been in business, the better.

5. Will the roofing company provide referrals or references from previous jobs?

Always ask for a list of 5 names and phone numbers of recent customers. Ask the referrals at minimum four questions:

  • Did the roofing contractor perform his/her work on a timely basis?
  • Was the contractor responsive when asked for information and changes?
  • Did the roofing contractor and additional workers act as if they cared about the customers interests?
  • Would you call the roofing contractor trustworthy?

If you ask these questions and do your own due diligence online you will be sure to find a great local roofing contractor.
